NGC/PCGS MS/SP-70 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Burnished Coin - Random Year

American Gold Eagle coins showcase iconic artistry that embodies patriotism, featuring some of the most recognizable symbols of the United States.

The American Eagle Program was first released in 1986, introducing the 1 Troy oz Gold Eagle bullion coin. The U.S. Mint quickly expanded the series by introducing special editions, including Proof and Burnished finishes, to enhance its appeal.

These specific coins are burnished versions of the 1/2 Troy oz Gold Eagle, which means the blanks used in their making underwent a special treatment process called burnishing.

Today, SD Bullion offers 1/2 oz Burnished American Gold Eagles, either graded as MS-70 by NGC or SP-70 by PCGS. They may vary in mintages and seals, randomly selected from our stock, according to your availability at the time of shipping.

  • Original or new reverse design;

  • Assorted mintage years.

The Obverse Design

Gold Eagles’ obverse replicates Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Coin design.

It portrays Lady Liberty marching forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch. The march represents the nation's evolution to progress, peace, and enlightenment. The word “LIBERTY” is inscribed on top. The Capitol Building is imprinted on the lower left, and the coin’s mintage year is on the right.

Reverse Design Type 1

The debuting reverse design depicts a family of Bald Eagles, in which the female eagle cherishes her hatchling under her wing while the male eagle perches on their nest.

This side is inscribed with the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the coin’s weight, metal content, and face value reading “1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD—25 DOLLARS.”

Reverse Design Type 2

The new reverse design was released in 2021 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the American Eagles Program. Jennie Norris reviewed the bald eagle design to give it a close-up depiction with a deep gaze and highlighted hooked beak.

The inscriptions remained the original design. They display the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," the nation’s name "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and "25 DOLLARS 1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD," referring to the coin’s face value, weight, and metal content.

Burnished Coins

A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned of all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins achieve a satin finish and a smooth surface, but with a less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.

A PCGS SP-70 Coin

PCGS (Professional Coins Grading Service) is widely recognized worldwide for appraising and certifying coins according to the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

According to the scale, SP stands for Specimen, describing a coin that is not a proof coin but is superior to a standard circulation coin. Grade 70 is attributed to perfect coins, which show no signs of flaws.

An NGC MS-70 Coin

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company uses the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70, to grade coins submitted to its appraisal.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin crafted in the format of a business circulation coin. The scale attributes 70, the highest grade, to flawless coins.
