The Design

The obverse depicts George Washington's effigy, designed by John Flanagan in 1932. It is an inspired version of the former President’s official portrayal, illustrated by William Cousins in 1786.

The inscriptions on this side read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.”

The reverse iconic American landscapes, from breathtaking national parks to historic monuments and verdant forests. The accompanying engravings identify the place used for inspiration, its corresponding state, the year of mintage, and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) and PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) are third-party services that evaluate and grade coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70. 

For both, MS stands for Mint State. MS coins are in the business coin format and are intended for widespread circulation. 69 is the grade given to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
