NGC MS-70 Early Releases 2023-W Burnished 1 oz American Palladium Eagle Coin
The American Palladium Eagle is part of the successful American Eagle Program, released in 1986. However, the US Mint included the Palladium Eagle in the collection years later, in 2017.
It contains a full troy ounce of 999.5 pure palladium showcasing the basic patriotic elements of American coinage: Lady Liberty and the bald eagle.
This coin, in particular, was produced within the first days of the 2023 mintage in the West Point branch of the US Mint. Hence, it bears the “W” mintmark on the obverse side.
These coins have been graded, certified and sealed by the NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company as a perfect MS-70 and are now available at SD Bullion.

The Design
The obverse resembles the “Winged Liberty” design featured in the Mercury Dime and created by Adolph A. Weinman.
The image consists of a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty wearing a winged cap. Thus, it includes “LIBERTY” engraved on top, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the artist's initials, the year of mintage, and the West Point mintmark.
The reverse design displays the Bald Eagle perched on a rock, holding a branch. It is also Adolph A. Weinman’s version of the 1907 American Institute of Architects Gold Medal reverse.
The inscriptions on this side are “UNITED STATES of AMERICA,” “$25,” describing the coin’s face value, “1 OZ Pd .9995 FINE,” referring to weight, metal content, and purity, and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Burnished Coins
A Burnished American Palladium Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming processes. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.
The Sheldon Grading Scale
The Sheldon Grading Scale, named after its creator, Dr. Willian Herbert Sheldon, established an international standard to evaluate and classify coins according to their condition and authenticity. The rank ranges from 1 to 70, and the higher the number the coin gets, the closer to perfection it is.
Third-party services, like the NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company, work independently of sovereign mints and uses the scale to provide coins a particular grade.
An NGC MS-70 Early Release Coin
The term “Early Release” is attributed to the coins produced in the first 30 days of mintage.
MS stands for Mint State, referring to coins made as popular business coins that remained uncirculated.
And 70, the highest grade on the scale, is attributed to an almost-perfect coin, which does not show visible flaws.
