To celebrate the ascension of King Charles III as a new leader of the British Commonwealth Community, the Royal Canadian Mint released a limited strike of themed privy marks on the Maple Leaf Series, showcasing the Polar Bear, the Congratulations, and the Dragon.

The Dragon privy mark relates to the Chinese Lunar Calendar, which celebrates the Year of the Dragon in 2024.

Besides the new obverse design, Silver Maple Leaf coins contain 1 Troy oz of 99.99% pure silver and the exclusive RCM’s advanced anti-counterfeiting measures.

The Design

The official Canadian Effigy of King Charles III, designed by Steven Rosati, stamps the obverse design of the Silver Maple Leaf. Besides the King’s portrait, the design features His Majesty’s name on top and the coin’s denomination and issuance through “5 DOLLARS 2024” at the bottom rim.

The reverse consists of Walter Ott's traditional Maple Leaf design accompanied by the Dragon Privy Mark.

The inscriptions on this side refer to the nation on top with “CANADA” and the coin’s weight, metal content, and fineness in English and French through “9999 FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR 9999.”

Anti-counterfeiting

RCM’s exclusive anticounterfeiting measures are applied in all Maple Leaf coins of the series. These measures include radial lines working as a backdrop on both sides, serrated edges, the RCM Bullion DNA™, and the MINTSHIELD™ surface protection to reduce the occurrence of white spot discoloration.

NGC stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company. It is a renowned third-party service that appraises and grades coins based on the Sheldon Grading Scale, independently of sovereign mints.

The scale ranks coins from 1 to 70 based on their condition,

MS stands for Mint State, referring to a coin made in the same format as a business circulation sample, which has never been in circulation. The grade 69 refers to a coin whose original luster is preserved despite almost invisible minor contact marks or flaws.
