The Design
Goldback notes feature a female figure representing a specific virtue. The Idaho 25 Goldback embodies Scientia, the virtue of knowledge, commemorating Idaho’s pioneering achievements in nuclear energy. In 1951, a reactor in Arco, Idaho, became the first in the world to generate electricity from nuclear power, and a few years later, another reactor powered the entire town, marking a historic milestone.
Scientia is depicted as a female scientist, accompanied by key equations and symbols tied to this breakthrough, highlighting Idaho’s role in advancing research and technology. The “25” denomination is displayed near “IDAHO GOLDBACK,” with the gold weight and content noted at the bottom alongside the quote from Philo T. Farnsworth: “There’s nothing worth knowing that isn’t difficult.” As with all Goldbacks, the reverse mirrors the obverse artwork.
Goldback Notes
A Goldback or a foil note is a voluntary regional currency accepted as payment in specific locations within the United States. Utah, Nevada, New Hampshire, Wyoming, South Dakota, Florida, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Idaho are states that have issued goldback notes.
These notes are not legal tender. However, they are valued as a bullion item because of the 24k gold paint applied to a plastic film.
Despite being shaped like regular currency notes, they range in weight from 1/1000 oz to 1/10 oz, and their denominations, which can range from 1/2 to 100, are proportional to the amount of gold they contain.
