The Design

The obverse showcases a right-profile bust joining elements from three Native American leaders: Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons. The inscriptions “LIBERTY” in front of the Native American’s forehead, the year of mintage, and an “F” for the artist’s initials are included.

On the reverse, a majestic American Bison, resembling a buffalo, dominates the coin's left side, giving it its moniker. The engravings reading “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “$50,” and “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD” denote the coin’s country of origin, motto, denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content.
