The Ulysses butterfly is a spectacular species native to the tropical regions of Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands, renowned for its brilliant iridescent blue wings that can span up to 14 cm. Its vivid coloration is created not by pigments but by microscopic wing scales that reflect and refract light, producing its distinctive shimmering appearance. 

In flight, the butterfly flashes vibrant blue. At the same time, the brown underside of its wings provides camouflage when resting, making it a beautiful symbol of transformation, vitality, and the wonders of nature.

The Design

The monochromatic obverse portrays King Charles III’s effigy designed by Dan Thorne along with the inscriptions “CHARLES III,” “AUSTRALIA,” and “2 DOLLARS.”

The reverse features a stunning colorized depiction of the Ulysses butterfly, surrounded by three smaller butterflies in flight, amid vibrant native flora. Featured botanical elements include the golden blooms of goodenia, the pink blossoms of Euodia—one of the butterfly's preferred food sources—as well as the distinctive Cape York lily and graceful bower of beauty species. 

The design also incorporates a ribbon scroll inscribed "BUTTERFLY," along with the coin's weight, purity, the year-date 2026, and The Perth Mint's "P" mintmark. 

Each coin has been individually treated with an antique finish. Because of this specialized process, every piece displays its own unique variations in tone and texture throughout the mintage.
