2024-W NGC MS-70 First Day Of Issue 1 oz American Gold Eagle Burnished Coin - West Point Label

The US Mint introduced the first Gold Eagle, a 1 Troy oz gold coin, into the bullion market in 1986, alongside its counterpart, the Silver Eagle coin, as part of the American Eagles Program's launch. The Gold Eagle Collection was later expanded to include fractional sizes and various coin finishes.

These specific coins are burnished versions, minted at the West Point branch, and feature the “W” mint mark. The blanks used in their minting underwent a special treatment process called burnishing, which cleans them from undesired oxides, resulting in a matte finish with more vivid design details.

Today, SD Bullion offers 2024-W 1 oz Burnished American Gold Eagles, taken among those available for purchase in the US Mint on day #1. These coins are certified as MS-70 and sealed with a special West Point Label.

The Design

The obverse depicts Lady Liberty marching forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch, symbolizing the nation's evolution towards progress, peace, and enlightenment.

The Capitol Building imprinted on the lower left, the word “LIBERTY,” and the coin’s mintage year, and the “W” mint mark on the right complete the image.

The reverse design showcases the bald eagle in a close-up depiction with a deep gaze and a highlighted hooked beak.

The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1 OZ. FINE GOLD—50 DOLLARS” are inscribed and inform weight, metal content, and face value.

Burnished Coins

A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.

An NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue Coin

Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) is internationally recognized for certifying coins using the Sheldon Scale, which rates coins on a scale from 1 to 70.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin crafted in the format of a business circulation coin. The highest grade on the scale, 70, is attributed to flawless coins.

NGC considers “First Day of Issue” a coin purchased from the US Mint on the very first day it was made publicly available.
