Coin Highlights
- Contains 1 of .9995 fine platinum;
- Bears a face value of 100 Pounds Sterling, guaranteed by the UK;
- 2nd strike of the new King Charles III’s obverse design;
- The reverse displays Britannia, the feminine personification of Great Britain;
- Micro-text, latent image, tincture lines, and surface animation as security features.
The Design
The obverse design has Martin Jenning’s official portrait of King Charles III. The coin’s face value of “100 POUNDS” accompanies His Majesty’s name, “CHARLES III,” and the letters “D. G. REX. F. D,” which stands for “By the grace of God, King,” is on the border.
Philip Nathan signs Britannia’s reverse design and showcases the national symbol as a protector of the realm by carrying the Union Jack Shield and her trident against a fierce wind. The inscriptions “BRITANNIA,” the year of issuance, “1 oz,” and “999.5 PLATINUM.” for weight, fineness, and metal content, encircle the image.
A small padlock on the lower left turns into a trident as you move the coin from side to side. The waves imprinted on the background come to life if you change your angle of view. The micro-engraved message “Decus et Tutamen,” which means “an ornament and a safeguard,” surrounds the first circle around Britannia’s depiction.
The Mintage
The Britannia Series debuted in 1987 with the 1 oz Gold Britannia, which, at that time, counted on a .917 pure gold content.
Silver Britannias were the next release on the list of bullion Britannia coins, finding its debut in 1997 with the 1 oz Silver coin containing .958 fine silver.
Over the years, the British Royal Mint advanced in techniques and provided higher fineness, diversity, and additional security to its products.
Released for the first time in 2018, Platinum Britannia coins maintain the high quality established by the British Royal Mint.
