The Design

It is the reverse design that names the coin. The giant American Bison depicted in a left-side upstanding position resembles a Buffalo, hence the coin’s moniker. 

Besides the image almost covering the surface, the inscriptions on this side start with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arching over the buffalo and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” 

A second motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” lies near the Buffalo’s muzzle. The description of denomination, weight, fineness, and metal content read “$50,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.”

The Native American Chief’s right profile on the obverse design resembles the Indian Head Nickel coin, created by James Earle Fraser in 1913. 

The profile unites traces from Native American tribes: the Big Tree, the Iron Tail, and the Two Moons. “LIBERTY” is inscribed on the front of the Native’s forehead. The year of issuance and an “F,” referring to the artist’s initials, are on the lower left.
