The Design
The obverse of the coin holds the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II created by Jody Clark in her 1998 portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
The engravings around the crowned Queen inform Her Majesty’s name and reign, the coin’s weight, metal content, purity, origin, and face value through “ELIZABETH II,” “1952-2022,” “AUSTRALIA,” “1 oz 9995 Pt”, and “100 DOLLARS.”
The reverse design features the coin’s motif. Since 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, the Lunar Series III exhibits a unique depiction of the Dragon, along with its corresponding symbol in Chinese, the inscriptions “DRAGON 2024” and “P125” referring to the mint’s 125th anniversary.
The Chinese Calendar
The ancient Chinese calendar identifies years, months, and days according to astronomy, opposed to the Gregorian Calendar, setting the beginning of the new year with the new moon, typically happening in January.
The Chinese Zodiac is composed of 12 animals, each one corresponding to an entire year. The animal’s traits dictate the year’s characteristics, as well as those born in those years.
The dragon is the fifth sign and the only mythical creature. It is a symbol of strength and good fortune, and those born in the Year of the Dragon are told to reflect those traits.
