2024 1 oz Gryphon Antique Silver Coin - Numismatic Icons
The Numismatic Icons Series aims to feature silver and gold coins with Greek Mythology as a motif. Previous editions have displayed Arethusa, Athena’s Owl, Pegasus, and Tortoise.
The 5th edition of the series now presents the Gryphon.
In Greek mythology, the Gyphon is considered the guardian of gold and protector of valuable treasures. Renowned as one of the most beloved mythological beings of the Middle Ages, it is still a popular heraldic symbol today.
This coin, struck in a minimal mintage, contains 1 Troy oz of 99.99% pure silver and legal tender status backed by the Cook Islands.

The Design
The Gryphon is a hybrid of an eagle and a lion and is often depicted alongside the cicada, a common motif on many ancient coins. The CI numerals adhere to the tradition of ancient Greek coinage to denote the place of origin.
On the obverse, King Charles III is portrayed through Dan Thorne’s design. It is encircled by the inscriptions: “5 DOLLARS,” “CHARLES III,” “2024,” and “COOK ISLANDS.”
The antique finish applied to the coin darkens the white silver to exhibit an ancient aspect of an old object.
