2024 1/20 oz Year of the Dragon Gold Coin - Lunar Series III 

The Lunar Series III is one of the most famous coin series from the Australian Perth Mint.

It is inspired by the Chinese Lunar Calendar and features a different Astrological sign on the series' varied-sized silver and gold coins, changing according to that year's ascending sign at each cycle change.

2024 is the Year of the Dragon, the only mystic creature and the fifth of the Calendar. Therefore, the 2024 edition brings alluring dragon designs and the “P125” mint mark, celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Perth Mint.

This coin, in particular, weighs 1/20 Troy oz of 99.99% pure gold and features the Blue Dragon.

The Design

The dragon featured on the coin is blue. It has a twisted body, sharp paws, and a long tail, surrounded by light-blue waves and fog.

It also features the creature’s Chinese character and the engravings “DRAGON 2024” and “P125,” which represent the Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary.

The obverse brings Jody Clark’s memorial effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. 

Besides the Queen’s name, “ELIZABETH II,” on top, Her Majesty’s reigning period is engraved as “1952-2022,” and “AUSTRALIA,” referring to the coin’s origin, complete the upper inscriptions.

The coin’s weight, fineness, metal content, and face value on the bottom read “1/20 oz 9999 Au” and “5 DOLLARS.” 

The Year of the Dragon

According to Chinese culture, each year is governed by an astrological sign that imprints its traits on the year’s fortune. 

2024 is the Year of Dragon. The Dragon is the fifth zodiac sign and the only mythical creature. Therefore, 2024 is expected to be magical and bring good fortune and prosperity.

As the Chinese Astrological Signs cycle lasts twelve years, previous Years of the Dragon correspond to 2012, 2000, 1988, and so on.
