Coin Highlights
- Contains 1 oz of .9995 fine platinum in BU condition;
- The second issue of the Tudor Beast Series;
- Bears a denomination of 100 pounds sterling and legal tender status;
- The obverse depicts the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II;
- The reverse showcases the Yale of Beaufort.
The Design
In honor of the longest-lasting monarch, the obverse features Queen Elizabeth II in a portrait designed in 2015 by Jody Clark. The 89-year-old Queen wears the glorious George IV State Diadem Crown and, encircling the bust, the words read: “100 POUNDS,” “ELIZABETH II” and the letters “D. G. REG. F. D,” meaning “By the grace of God, Queen” in Latin.
The reverse showcases the mythic yale supporting the Arms of Jane Seymour, Henri VIII’s new wife. The yale represents strong defense; therefore, it symbolizes the king’s support, protection, and authority over his wife. The information engraved around the image corresponds to the coin’s weight, metal content, fineness, and year of mintage. They read: “YALE OF BEAUFORT, ” “1 oz,” “FINE PLATINUM,” and “999.5.”
The Tudor Beasts Series
David Lawrence is the artist who signs the designs stamped on the Tudor Beasts Series. The inspiration came from the Royal Beasts sculpted during Henri VIII’s reign and settled along the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace.
The Tudor Dynasty started through an agreed marriage between the Lancaster and York families. Henri VII was the first Tudor, succeeded by his son Henri VIII and got to its end with Queen Elizabeth, Henri VIII’s daughter.
Besides the 2023 Yale of Beaufort, the series has struck the Lion of England in 2022, and the next heraldic beasts comprise the Seymour Panther, the Bull of Clarence, the Tudor Dragon, the Greyhound of Richmond, the Royal Dragon, the Seymour Unicorn, the Queen's Panther, and the Queen’s Lion.
