The Australian Royal Mint introduces a new silver coin series. Its Antarctic Territory Series will feature the native animals of the Antarctic through exceptionally crafted silver coins.

The debut piece of this collection is the Emperor Penguin Silver Coin.

The Emperor Penguin is the largest and heaviest among all penguin species. It can reach a height of approximately 3.7 feet and weigh as much as 88 pounds, which helps it thrive in the extreme conditions of the Antarctic.

The 2023 Emperor Penguin coin weighs 1 Troy oz of 99.9% fine silver and is legal tender in Australia.

The Design 

The obverse features Jody Clark’s Memorial design of Queen Elizabeth II, which, in addition to Her Majesty’s bust, informs her reigning years “1952-2022.” It displays the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “AUSTRALIA,” “2023,” and “1 DOLLAR.”

The reverse illustrates a colony of penguins lining up at the edge of an ice shelf near open water. While some penguins watch, others dive in and swim beneath the frozen waters.

The coin’s name, “EMPEROR PENGUIN,” and the coin’s weight, purity, and metal content, reading “1 oz .999 SILVER,” arch over the image.
