2024 1 Kilo Mexican Aztec Calendar Silver Coin

The "Aztec Calendar" silver coin was first issued by the Mexico Mint in 2007 during a special event held at the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico City.

It celebrates Mexican heritage and the importance of ancient Aztec culture in developing contemporary knowledge.

The Kilo silver coin combines high craftsmanship, reproducing the Aztec calendar Stone in detail, and pure metal content used to craft such a high-sized coin.

The Design

Like the Libertad Coins, the obverse showcases the public seals used throughout Mexican history, encircling the current one.

The artistry showcases an eagle perched on a pear cactus defeating a rattlesnake, symbolizing the Mexican victory over the former Spanish domination. The seal is surrounded by “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.”

The reverse replicates the Aztec Calendar Stone, with its intricate gears and the face of the Aztec sun god, Tonatiuh, in the center of the stone.

On the outer rim, the engravings read “CALENDARIO AZTECA,” “$100 2024 1kg PLATA PURA LEY .999” and describe the coin’s name, face value, issuance, weight, metal content, and fineness. The “M” mint mark identifies the Mexican Mint.

The Aztec Calendar

The Aztec Calendar was based on two different cycles that worked together. One was a 365-day cycle called the xiuhpohualli, or "counting of the years," which was based on the solar year. This cycle was divided into 18 months, each with 20 days. 

The second cycle, called the tonalpohualli, or "counting of the days," lasted 260 days and was likely based on astronomy. It was divided into groups of 20 days, each with a repeating set of 13 numbers. 

When these two cycles aligned, they formed a 52-year period, which the Aztecs considered a "century." The famous Aztec calendar stone shows this calendar system, with the face of the sun god, Tonatiuh, in the center, surrounded by panels representing previous ages of the world.
