2023 ½ oz Gold Maple Leaf Coin
The Gold Maple Leaf debuted in the bullion market in 1979 to conquer its space in the spotlight along with other remarkable gold coins, like the South African Gold Krugerrands and the Austrian 100 Corona.
The first release was the 1 oz gold coin, but the Royal Canadian Mint began striking fractional sizes in the following years.
First introduced in 1986, the ½ oz Gold Maple Leaf is the largest fractional size of the collection, which also comprises ¼ oz, 1/10 oz, 1/20 oz, and 1 gram.
Coin Highlights
- Contains ½ oz of .9999 fine gold - 24k;
- Brilliant Uncirculated condition coin;
- Face value of CAD 20, guaranteed by the Canadian government;
- The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II through the eyes of Susanna Blunt;
- The reverse displays the iconic maple leaf by Walter Ott.
The Design
The obverse features a 79-year-old Queen Elizabeth II, the British Commonwealth Community Head of State. The words engraved with her effigy read “ELIZABETH II,” “20 DOLLARS,” and the year of mintage.
The reverse depicts the sugar maple leaf, a national symbol. The inscriptions on the outer rim refer to the coin’s identity, written in English and in French. They read: “CANADA,” “9999,” “FINE GOLD,” “½ OZ,” “OR PUR,” and “9999.”
Mintage
The Gold Maple Leafs premiered with the usual 1 oz coin in 1979 with a 99.9% of gold content. But the Royal Canadian Mint’s excellence in refining bullion soon led the mint to a landmark in 1982, when they increased the fineness levels to 99.99% of gold.
The ½ oz Gold Maple Leaf has a face value of 5 dollars and carries legal tender status backed by the Canadian Government.
The RCM Bullion DNA
Besides the highest levels of metal content in its pieces, the Royal Canadian Mint is famous for the high-tech security measures applied to ensure its coins’ authenticity.
The Bullion DNA, for example, is an exclusive technology developed at the Royal Canadian Mint. DNA stands for Digitial Non-Destructive Activation, and it provides each coin with an encrypted string of codes, registered in the company’s database and readable only through specific scanners.
