The Design

Created in 1987, the Britannia depiction in this program carries a trident, demonstrating the nation’s superior navy over the waves and the Union Jack Shield stamped with the British flag. The first circle surrounding the image is a repetition of the words “Decus et Tutamen,” meaning “An Ornament and a Safeguard.” The words inscribed on the outer rim are “BRITANNIA,” “2023,” “½ oz,” “999.9,” and “FINE GOLD,” standing for the series’ name, mintage, weight, fineness, and metal content.

The obverse design welcomes the new King of Britain, Charles III. Depicted for the first time as Britain’s monarch by Martin Jennings, the King got an elegant and simple left-profile effigy, different from the Queen’s, whose portrait was a right-profile image. Surrounding the image, the inscriptions read “50 POUNDS” for the denomination, “Charles III,” and “D. G. REX. F. D” meaning “By the grace of God, King” in Latin.

Security Features

The collection received extra security features in 2021.

Texture motion on the background images provides movement to the waves and turns the trident into a padlock that lies aside as the coin's viewing angle changes. The Union Jack Shield got tincture lines that highlight the flag stripes. And the micro-texting “Decus et Tutamen” was added to the design.
