- The sugar maple leaf, one of Canada’s most beloved national symbols, embellishes the reverse side;
- Radial lines finish on both verses of the coin offer improved security;
Design
The awestruck designs on these gold bullion coins have been attracting coin collectors and precious metal investors for decades. As it is usual across the British Commonwealth, the obverse of ¼ oz Maple Leaf is adorned with the Queen’s effigy. This bust portrays Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as her 79-year-old self. It was designed by Susanna Blunt, only the second Canadian artist to create a portrait of a British monarch for a Canadian coin. Above the bust is the inscription “ELIZABETH II”, and on the bottom, “10 DOLLARS 2022”.
The reverse is a beautiful rendition of a highly-detailed sugar maple leaf. Walter Ott designed the sculpture back in 1979 for the debut of the Canadian Maple Leaf coin series. The inscriptions on the outer rim read “CANADA” above the maple leaf and “9999 FINE GOLD 1/4 OZ OR PUR 9999”, from left to right. The plain surface of both verses features a radial lines finish for the utmost security.
Mintage
The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins were first struck back in 1979 and have featured annual releases ever since. At the time, the Royal Canadian Mint produced the coins with .999 pure gold. The ¼ troy ounce version was only introduced in 1982, along with the 1/10 troy ounce size. It was a response to the public’s clamor for more varied and affordable options in which to invest in gold bullion with the program. From that point on, the Royal Canadian Mint changed to .9999 fine gold content.
The gold coin is legal tender within Canada and has a face value of 10 Canadian Dollars. It weighs 12.44 grams (¼ troy ounce) and is 1.7 mm thick, with a diameter of 20.00 mm.
Along with the ¼ troy ounce version, the Royal Canadian Mint also produces Gold Maple Leafs in the following sizes and face values: 1 troy ounce (CAD$50), ½ troy ounce (CAD$20), 1⁄10 troy ounce (CAD$5), 1⁄20 troy ounce (CAD$1) and 1 gram (CAD$0.50).
