The Royal Canadian Mint introduced its first gold bullion coin into the market back in 1979 with the 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf. Ever since then, the coin has grown in popularity among coin collectors and gold investors alike. For that reason, the Mint expanded the program to incorporate fractional troy ounce sizes and a 1-gram version. The ½ oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin is the largest fractional size of the Gold Maple Leaf series. The half-ounce Gold Maple Leaf offers a fresh approach to investing in gold bullion, especially for those on a strict budget.

Coin Highlights:

  • The ½ Troy oz version was introduced in 1986;
  • Guaranteed to contain ½  troy ounce of .9999 fine gold content (24-karat gold) in BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) condition;
  • The Royal Canadian Mint is one of the few Mints across the globe to stamp their gold bullion with the .9999 millesimal fineness;
  • This gold coin has a face value of CAD$20 and is legal tender in Canada;
  • Obverse features the effigy of 79-year-old Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt;
  • The reverse shows the beloved Canadian national symbol, a sugar maple leaf, created by Walter Ott;
  • Industry-leading security features include a series of radial lines on the plain surfaces of the coin;

Design

Susanna Blunt was the designer for this gold coin’s obverse. She portrayed Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in her 79-year-old self, wearing pearl earrings and a necklace. Above her portrait is her Name, “ELIZABETH II”, and, on the bottom, is the denomination and mint year “20 DOLLARS 2022”. Blunt created the design in 2003 and the Royal Canadian Mint introduced it into the series in 2005.

Walter Ott was the designer for the reverse. He created a beautifully detailed sculpture of a sugar maple leaf, with its five long-pointed lobes, grains, and pointed teeth. The design is the same since the program was introduced in 1979. The inscriptions on the outer rim read “CANADA” on top, and “9999 FINE GOLD 1/2 OZ OR PUR 9999”, from left to right, both in English and in French. The background of both verses has a radial lines finish for improved security.

Mintage

The half-ounce version of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf launched in 1986 as the public wanted more varied options in which to invest in gold bullion with the program. At the time, the coins were already struck with .9999 pure gold content. And the use of 24-karat gold continues to this day.

This gold coin has legal tender status in Canada, with a face value of $20 Canadian Dollars. It weighs 0.5 troy ounces (15.55 grams) and has a diameter of 25 mm.

Besides the 1 troy ounce and the half-ounce Gold Maple Leaf, the Royal Canadian Mint releases, every year, this gold bullion coin in the following fractional sizes and face values: ¼ troy ounce (CAD$10), 1⁄10 troy ounce (CAD$5), 1⁄20 troy ounce (CAD$1) and 1 gram (CAD$0.50).
