Buy 2022 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle Coins
The United States Mint started producing the American Eagle program back in 1986. It started with the American Eagle silver coin, and the American Eagle gold coins, which involves a 1-troy-ounce version and three other fractional sizes. The 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle coin is the smallest of the program. One could argue it is an affordable way of enjoying the benefits of gold investment, while sticking to a strict budget.
- Official gold bullion coin of the United States since 1986;
- Contains 1/10 troy ounce of pure gold (0.9167 fine) in BU condition;
- Lady Liberty on the obverse, modified from Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ original design for the Double Eagle ($20) gold coin;
- New reverse, introduced by the 2021 American Gold Eagle Type 2;
- New reverse design created by Jennie Norris, portraying a bald eagle’s head staring ahead;
- Face value of $5, backed by the United States Federal Government.
The obverse of the 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle is arguably one of the most famous designs in coinage ever. It features a modified version of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty design, first used in the $20 Double Eagle gold coin. The scene shows the Goddess, personification of freedom, striding ahead, with her left foot over a rock. Her right arm is stretched forward as she holds a lit torch. Her left arm is wide open to the side, holding an olive branch. In the background, the Capitol Building is visible on the lower-left face of the coin, as an array of sunlight shines on Lady Liberty’s back. The writing on the outer circle above read the word “LIBERTY” and, encircling the whole scene is a series of six-pointed stars.
The United States Mint introduced a new reverse design in the second half of 2021. AIP artist Jennie Norris created the design. She portrayed a bald eagle’s head earnestly gazing to the horizon in its left profile. The artist gave incredible attention to detail to the eagle’s beak, the feathers surrounding its necks, and the markings around its eye. The artists initials “JN” are right under the eagle’s neck. The other inscriptions on this face of the coin read, right above the eagle’s head “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST”, both mottos of the United States of America. On the outer rim is the name of the country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, the face value and gold content “$5 DOLLARS - 1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD”.
The 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle coins are guaranteed to contain that precise weight in .999 fine gold. However, the United States Mint adds a small percentage of silver and copper to improve the coin’s durability. That, technically, makes the coin a 22-karat gold bullion piece (.9167 fineness). Do note, however, that they are slightly heavier than other similar coins, such as the 1/10 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.
American Gold Eagle Series
As we have mentioned before, the American Gold Eagle bullion coin program started back in 1986. At first, the United States Mint produced only the silver bullion coin and the gold bullion coins (1 troy ounce and fractional sizes). The coins quickly became very popular among both precious metal investors and coin collectors. With the popularization of platinum as a bullion metal, the US Mint started producing the American Platinum Eagle coins in 1997, and the American Palladium Eagle coins in 2017.
The 1/10 oz American Gold Eagles bear a face value of $5, legal tender within the United States of America. The other American Gold Eagle fractional sizes include the ¼ oz ($10) and the ½ oz ($25). And, of course, this gold coin is also minted in the 1-troy-ounce size.
