The Gothic Crown is the third release of the series. William Wyon created it, and the Royal Mint released it in 1847, during the 10th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s reign. Wyon served as the Second Engraver at the Royal Mint from 1817 to 1828 and as Chief Engraver until he died in 1851.

This particular coin is a five-ounce sample, purchased from the Royal Mint within the first 30 days of its official release and is housed in its original mint box.

The Design

The coin’s obverse features the fifth official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. Her Majesty’s crowned bust is encircled by the engravings “2021,” “ELIZABETH II,” “D.G.REG.F.D,” “500 POUNDS,” which refer to the coin’s year of issuance, the Latin inscription “Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith,” and the coin’s face value.

The reverse, designed by William Wyon, showcases his famous design of Queen Victoria wearing the “Gothic Crown” first used in 1847 during the 10th Anniversary of her reign. The inscription on this side read "VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRITANNIAR: REG: F:D:” meaning “Victoria by the Grace of God, Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith.”

An NGC PF-70 First Releases Coin 

NGC, which stands for Numismatic Guaranty Company, operates independently of sovereign mints, evaluating and grading coins. Utilizing the Sheldon Scale, a grading system from 1 to 70, they meticulously assess coins based on their condition.

PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a coin with no visible flaws.

NGC considers “First Releases” the coins purchased and taken to its evaluation within the first 30 days of public release by the original mint.
