Introducing the 2021 1.5 oz Otter Silver Coin. The Royal Canadian Mint has released a unique series of silver coins showcasing the richness of the global fauna.

The 2021 edition presents the Otter, a semiaquatic carnivorous mammal native to the North Pacific Ocean but easily adjustable to cold or warm habitats.

Following the series standard, the Otter coin weighs 1.5 oz of 99.99% pure silver, 50% thicker than traditional one-ounce coins.

The Design

The obverse features Susanna Blunt’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The inscriptions surrounding Her Majesty’s bust read “ELIZABETH II,” “8 DOLLARS,” referring to the coin’s face value, and “D.G.REGINA,” which translates to “By the grace of God, Queen.”

The reverse design features the otter leisurely swimming backward in Pacific waters. The inscriptions surrounding the design read “CANADA 2021,” 9999,” referring to the coin’s purity, “FINE SILVER 1 ½ OZ ARGENT PUR,” which stands for the coin’s metal content and weight. 

One of the RCM anticounterfeiting measures is a small maple leaf imprinted beside the Bald Eagle depiction, micro-laser engraved with the year of issuance.
