The Royal Canadian Mint Gold Maple Coin was first released in 1979 by the Royal Canadian Mint. Originally though, the coins were only minted in a purity of .999 gold. It wasn’t until 1982 that the mint switched to using .9999 purity gold in it’s coins. This was also the first year they released the Maple Leaf Coin as a fractional 1/10 oz coin.
First introduced in 2003, the effigy of a 79 year old Queen Elizabeth II is still proudly featured on the obverse of this year’s Gold Maple release.
