The emu belongs to the family of flightless running birds, known as ratites. The family of ratites involves kiwis, ostriches, cassowaries, and rhea, all birds solely located in the Southern Hemisphere. The emu is the world's second largest bird, second to only the ostrich. Emus are prevalent across most of Australia's island, though they avoid large towns, thick forests, and deserts. When moving towards better food and water resources, emus can form huge migratory flocks. Emus migrate north in summer, and southwest in winter.
