The emu belongs to the family of flightless running birds, known as ratites. The family of ratites involves kiwis, ostriches, cassowaries, and rhea, all birds solely located in the Southern Hemisphere. The emu is the world's second largest bird, second to only the ostrich. Emus are prevalent across most of Australia's island, though they avoid large towns, thick forests, and deserts.
