The Design

Adolph A. Weinman designed Lady Liberty, walking toward the sun's rays enveloped in the American flag. In the image, she holds oak and laurel branches in one hand while stretching the other arm. It also contains the word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage.

On the reverse, John Mercant designed the Heraldic Eagle with the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. Thirteen pointed stars above the Eagle represent the original colonies.

The “W” mint mark from the West Point branch is on the lower left.

The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR,” describing the face value, weight, metal content, and purity encircle the image.

Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.

An NGC PF-70 Coin 

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company appraises and grades coins, apart from sovereign mints, using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70 depending on their condition.

PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a coin with no visible flaws.
