2016 NGC MS-69 DPL First Releases 5 oz America the Beautiful Fort Moultrie Silver Coin

The America The Beautiful Quarter Program is one of the most beautiful coin programs issued by the US Mint.

From 2010 to 2021, it imprinted America’s most emblematic parks, monuments, and forests on its 5 Troy oz silver coins.

The Fort Moultrie Silver Coin is the fifth strike of the 2016 edition and the 35th in the series.

Fort Moultrie, or Fort Sumter National Monument, was established as a national site in 1948 in South Carolina. It was the first fort on Sullivan’s Island and was incomplete when attacked by Commodore Sir Peter Parker and nine warships on June 28, 1776. After a nine-hour battle, the British ships retreated, saving Charleston. Named after its commander, Colonel William Moultrie, the fort fell into disrepair post-Revolution. A second fort, built in 1798, was destroyed by a hurricane in 1804. In 1809, a third brick Fort Moultrie was constructed on Sullivan’s Island.

You can find 2016 5 oz America the Beautiful Fort Moultrie Silver Coins purchased from the US Mint within the first 30 days of their official release at SD Bullion. They exhibit a proof-like appearance and are certified by NGC as MS-69 DLP Early Releases coins.

It also contains the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.”

The reverse shows Sergeant William Jasper returning the regimental flag to the ramparts amid an attack from a British ship.

The inscriptions accompanying the image read “FORT MOULTRIE,” “SOUTH CAROLINA,” “2015,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

An NGC MS-69 DPL “First Releases” Coin

Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) is a globally renowned third-party service that evaluates and grades coins. They utilize the Sheldon Grading Scale, which rates coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.

For NGC, “First Releases” refer to coins purchased from the original mint within the first 30 days of their official release and taken to its appraisal.

MS stands for Mint State. Mint State coins are shaped as business coins. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.

DPL refers to a deep proof-like finish, describing coins whose fields are deeply mirrored and resembling proof coins but are actually bullion coins.
