2013-W NGC MS-70 Early Releases 1 oz American Gold Eagle Burnished Coin

Burnished Gold Eagles undergo a special treatment process that polishes the blanks and cleans them from undesired oxides. That results in a matte appearance with more vivid design details.

These Burnished Gold Eagles, in particular, were purchased from the US Mint during the first 30 of public availability and carry the “W” mint mark, identifying the West Point branch as the mint that issued them.

You can purchase 2013-W 1 oz Burnished American Gold Eagles, sealed and graded by NGC as MS-70 Early Releases samples at SD Bullion.

Coin Highlights

  • Evaluated, encapsulated, and graded as an MS-70 coin by NGC;
  • Taken from the US Mint during the first 30 of public availability;
  • Burnished coin;
  • Produced by the United States Mint;
  • Issued in West Point and carries the “W” mint mark;
  • Guaranteed to contain 1 troy ounce of pure gold content;
  • With anti-counterfeiting reeded edges;
  • Bears legal tender status and a USD 50 denomination;
  • Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ design stamps the obverse;
  • Miley Busiek’s Eagle features the reverse.

The Design

On the obverse, Saint-Gaudens reflects the nation's evolution toward progress, peace, and enlightenment by depicting Lady Liberty striding forward with a torch and an olive branch.

The image also contains the Capitol Building, the word “LIBERTY,” and the coin’s mintage year. The “W” mint mark is on the right.

On the reverse, Miley Busiek’s illustration displays a female eagle cherishing its hatchling under her wing while the male perches their nest.

The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “1 OZ. FINE GOLD—50 DOLLARS” describe weight, metal content, and face value.

Burnished Coins

A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.

An NGC MS-70 Early Releases Coin

Third-party grading services like NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) use the Sheldon Grading Scale to evaluate and attribute grades to coins and other numismatic items.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin crafted in the format of a business circulation coin. Since it has never been in circulation, the coin has no sign of wear, tear, or scratching, which grants it a 70 grade.

NGC considers “Early Releases” the coins purchased and taken to its evaluation within the first 30 days of public release by the US Mint.
