The 2006 edition of American Silver Eagles marked the 20th anniversary of the coin program. To celebrate the landmark, the US Mint bumped the mintage figure Proof American Silver Eagle coins with an additional 200,000 units that year!
Proof Silver Eagles are one-ounce coins, 99.9% fine silver. These coins, in particular, were meticulously struck in West Point and carry the “W” mint mark. They are also graded as PF-70 coins and sealed in NGC slabs with Edmund C. Moy's Label.
As the luminary Father of the Modern Coin Era, Edmund C. Moy reshaped the course of the U.S. Mint during his tenure as its 38th Director from 2006 to 2011. With visionary zeal, he revitalized a Mint adrift, introducing innovative designs that sparked a resurgence in collector interest. Moy's leadership led to iconic series like the 24k Gold Buffalo and the legendary 2009 Ultra High Relief, marking a pivotal moment in numismatic history. Beyond aesthetic achievements, he also orchestrated record-breaking production levels of gold and silver coins, fueling global demand for modern U.S. Coins.

The Design
Adolph A. Weinman designed the Walking Liberty to be on the 1917 Half-Dollar Coin. The US Mint rescued this beloved design as the obverse of Silver Eagles.
Lady Liberty strides toward the sun's rays with the American flag draped on her shoulder. She holds oak and laurel branches in one hand while stretching the other arm. It also displays the word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage.
John Mercanti was the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint. He created the Heraldic Eagle with the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. Thirteen pointed stars above the Eagle represent the original colonies.
The “W” mint mark from the West Point branch is on the lower left, while the inscriptions describing the face value, weight, metal content, and purity encircle the image. They read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.
An NGC PF-70 Coin
Like similar coin grading services, NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70 depending on their condition.
PF stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 70 is the highest grade and indicates a coin with no visible flaws.
