The Design

The obverse illustrates Lady Liberty marching forward carrying a torch and an olive branch, a symbol of the national progress toward peace and enlightenment. 

The image also contains the Capitol Building imprinted on the lower left, the word “LIBERTY,” and the coin’s mintage year.

The reverse portrays a family of Bald Eagles, in which a female eagle cherishes her hatchling under her wing while the male perches on their nest. 

Engravings describing weight, metal content, and face value reads “1 OZ. FINE GOLD—50 DOLLARS.” Additional engravings read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
