This design was misinterpreted by people, who assumed it featured Mercury, the Roman God who was famous for wearing similarly winged headgear. Even though Adolph Weinman, the artist who created this design, later clarified that the image was indeed of Lady Liberty wearing a winged cap, the name 'Mercury Dime' has stuck to this day.
