The Kraken is a legendary gigantic sea monster said to be found in the waters surrounding Norway and Greenland. It was first mentioned in an ancient Icelandic story written in the thirteenth century AD, where two monsters, the Lyngbakr and the Hafgufa, crossed paths with the main characters of the saga who were sailing across the Sea of Greenland. The Hafgufa is said to be connected with the kraken.
The unidentified author of a scientific paper released also in the 13th century defined the behavior of the two creatures after they returned from a journey to Greenland. The author speculated that the creatures were unable to reproduce due to the fact that only two were ever witnessed. The legendary creature of myth may have come from sightings of real giant squid, which are estimated to reach 46 feet in length, including tentacles. These animals usually live deep in the ocean but are seen on the surface and have allegedly "attacked" ships before when disturbed.
This Kraken Silver Round is made by the Intaglio Mint using 2 troy ounces of .999 silver bullion.
The obverse of the Kraken Round features the Kraken attacking a ship and dragging it into the depths of the ocean. There will be a ship in the background with seagulls in mid-air. The words “THE KRAKEN” will be featured at the top of the round.
The reverse of the Kraken Silver Round features the Intaglio Mint logo. The Intaglio logo is a pillar bearing the words “EST. 2010” on it with a map of the Earth with “INTAGLIO” above and “MINT” below it behind the pillar. This is surrounded by beautifully crafted lines which are encircled by the words, “TWO TROY OUNCES” & “.999 FINE SILVER”.
