The Battlefield Cross is a ceremonial substitute of a cross for a soldier killed in action on the battlefield and it is placed on the battlefield or at the soldier's base camp. The purpose of it is to show honor and respect for the dead. The practice began as a way to identify bodies on the battlefield before removal during the American Civil War. The Battlefield Cross is still used today as a means of honoring the dead. It is commonly seen after a battle in the field or base camp, especially in Afghanistan or Iraq among American troops. While it is not used anymore as a method of identification, it still serves as a mourning method amongst the living because it is rarely possible for troops still in combat to attend the funeral of their brothers/sisters in arms.
Each Battlefield Cross Silver Round contains two troy ounces of pure .999 silver (like most common silver rounds). Also, quantities of 10 would fit in a Generic Round Tube.
The obverse of these Battlefield Silver Rounds feature an assault rifle with a pair of military boots in front of it with a soldier’s helmet resting atop the rifle’s muzzle. Minted above the rifle are the words, “FALLEN WARRIORS”. Below the rifle are the words, “YOU ARE NEVER FORGOTTEN”. Minted behind the rife is a mountainous landscape, which is the common battlefield terrain for current US soldiers in the Middle East.
The reverse of these Silver Rounds features a bald eagle with outstretched wings holding a banner in its talons that bears the words, “GOD BLESS AMERICA”. Above the eagle are the words “HOME OF THE FREE” & below the eagle are the words “BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE”. Just above this are the words “2 TROY OUNCES .999 FINE SILVER”.
