In May 1835, the 6th director of the Mint was named as Robert M. Patterson. Appointing Christian Gobrecht as the Second Engraver was one of Patterson's first decisions as Director. Thomas Sully and Titian Peale also were hired by Patterson to come up with potential designs for a new silver dollar.
Gobrecht combined Sully and Peale’s concepts with his own ideas and had the design made into physical samples. President Andrew Jackson and Treasury Secretary Levi Woodbury were shown the designs and approved them for minting in October 1835. This design resulted in the iconic Gobrecht Silver Dollar, minted from 1836-1839. The Gobrecht Silver Dollar was the first silver dollar coin minted by the US in three decades at the time. The Seated Liberty design on its obverse was used from 1836-1873, however, the reverse of the US Silver Dollar was changed in 1840 to a different eagle design. So only the silver dollars minted from 1836-1839 are considered “Gobrecht Dollars”.
These silver dollar tribute rounds are minted by the Intaglio Mint of Denver, Colorado using 1 troy ounce of pure 0.999 silver.
The obverse of this Gobrecht Dollar Tribute Round features the “Seated Liberty” design. This design is comprised of Lady Liberty sitting on a boulder, looking to her right, while holding a shield bearing the word “LIBERTY” in her right hand. Her left hand is holding a pole with a liberty cap on the end of it as a statement of American liberty.
The reverse of these silver rounds features a bald eagle in mid-flight, surrounded by 26 stars. The 26 stars represent the 26 states that existed when the Gobrecht Silver Dollar was being minted. Just above the eagle’s tail feathers is the round’s purity of “.999 FINE SILVER”. Along the top of the reverse are the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and along the bottom is the round’s weight of “2 TROY OUNCES”.
