The second release of the Australian Kookaburra Silver Coins came at a tumultuous time in 1991, the year that witnessed the collapse of the Soviet Union. Interestingly, these 1 oz 1991 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coins are the last coin releases to bear $5 (AUD) face values, as all the subsequent coins bore $1 legal tender values.
Perth Mint’s Kookaburra Silver Coin program had captured the attention of collectors and investors in 1990, and were waiting anxiously for the next coin in the series. Available in coins with silver weights ranging from 1 troy ounce to 1 kilo, the coin program was a massive hit in the precious metals market.
Each of these particular coins contains 1 troy ounce of 0.999 pure silver. They also carry a $5 (AUD) face value – the very last release to do so.
The obverses of these coins bear the third effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II – created by Royal Mint sculptor Maklouf. This impression captures Her Majesty’s right profile – wearing the customary royal crown.
On the other hand, the reverse shows a kookaburra sitting atop a tree, intently staring at a hole in the tree trunk – presumably looking for food. Dr. Stuart Devlin created this design for the Perth Mint – for use on the 1991 issue of the Australian Kookaburra.
These 1 oz 1991 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coins will help complete Silver Kookaburra collections. Moreover, its pure silver content makes it valuable to investors who wish to diversify their precious metals portfolios.
