The Design

The obverse portrays the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. This effigy of the mature, crowned monarch is surrounded by the inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II,” “AUSTRALIA,” and “1 DOLLAR.”

The reverse displays a detailed image of the kookaburra, Australia’s iconic laughing bird, perched on a gum tree branch surrounded by leaves. It also features the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark and a small lunar horse privy mark as a tribute to the Year of the Horse in the Chinese Lunar Calendar.

The inscription “AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA” arches above the central image, while the bottom of the design includes the coin’s specifications: “2014 1 oz 999 SILVER.”
