1986 NGC MS-69 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coin

The first American Gold Eagle coins were released in 1986, with the debut of the American Eagle Program. The premier gold coin was a 1 Troy oz Gold Eagle, but the US Mint broadened the Gold Eagle collection in the same year to include fractional sizes.

The 1/4 oz US Gold Eagle is one of the fractional options produced by the US Mint as a component of the series. It consists of a 22k gold coin with legal tender status and a standard design featuring the beloved Lady Liberty by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and the Bald Eagle by Miley Busiek.

The Design

The obverse is inspired by Augustus Saint-Gaudens' 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Coin, featuring Lady Liberty marching forward with a torch and an olive branch. 

This march symbolizes the nation's journey toward progress, peace, and enlightenment. The design is completed with the word "LIBERTY," the Capitol Building, and the coin's mintage year.

On the reverse, Miley Busiek designed a family of Bald Eagles, depicting a female eagle protecting its hatchling under her wing while the male eagle perches on their nest. 

It includes the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the mottos "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," and details about the coin's weight, metal content, and face value, which reads "1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD—10 DOLLARS."
