1986 NGC MS-69 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coin

The US Mint first issued American Gold Eagles in 1986 through the American Eagle Program. The program's first gold coin was a 1 Troy oz Gold Eagle, but the collection was boosted in the same year to include fractional counterparts.

The 1/2 oz US Gold Eagle is the heaviest fractional option, consisting of a 22k gold coin with legal tender status and a standard design featuring Lady Liberty, designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and the Bald Eagle family by Miley Busiek.

The Design

The obverse reproduces Augustus Saint-Gaudens' 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Coin, which showcases Lady Liberty marching forward with a torch and an olive branch. 

This march symbolizes the nation's journey toward progress, peace, and enlightenment. The design also displays the word "LIBERTY," the Capitol Building, and the coin's mintage year.

Miley Busiek designed a family of Bald Eagles on the reverse, depicting a female eagle protecting its hatchling under her wing while the male eagle perches on their nest. 

It includes the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the mottos "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," and details about the coin's weight, metal content, and face value, which reads "1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD—25 DOLLARS."
