1986 Gold Sovereign 3-Coin Proof Set with Box & COA
The 1986 Commonwealth Games held in Scotland was celebrated by the Royal Mint with a special edition of Gold Sovereign Coins.
The Sovereign gold coin was first issued in the Tudor Era, through the strike of a one-of-a-kind 20-shilling gold coin. This coin showcased a reverse design crafted by Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci, portraying the iconic scene of St. George and the dragon.
Over the years, the series has also featured relevant historical moments, like the rise of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne and her Golden Jubilee in 2002.
The 13th Commonwealth Games took place in Edinburgh, Scotland, during the summer of 1986, running from July 24 to August 2. Only 27 Commonwealth nations chose to participate, while 32 nations boycotted the event. Bermuda was the final nation to withdraw, leaving after the first day of competition.
This coin set is composed of the three 22k gold coins of the series: a Double Sovereign (two pounds), a Full Sovereign (one Pound), and a a Half Sovereign (ten Shillings).
The 1986 Gold Sovereign 3-Coin Proof Set housed in an original mint box with a Certificate of Authenticity is available for purchase now at SD Bullion.

The Design
The common obverse design features the right-profile bust of crowned Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian-Rank Broadly, accompanied by the coin’s face value.
Two of the coins feature Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic design of St. George slaying the dragon, a hallmark of all British Gold Sovereigns.
The third coin displays St. Andrew’s cross in the background, with a Scottish thistle in the foreground, symbolizing Scotland’s role as the host nation of the 13th Commonwealth Games.
Because they are proof coins, their blank fields exhibit a mirror-like luster while the design elements are engraved with a matte finish.
