It was first introduced by the Bank of Mexico in 1921 to celebrate 100 years of Mexican independence.

The Design

On the reverse, the Winged Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, has outstretched wings, broken chains, and a laurel wreath as symbols of freedom. 

The inscriptions inform the coin’s face value, “50 PESOS,” its weight, “37.5 Gr,” metal content “ORO PURO,” the year of independence “1821” on the lower left, and the minting year on the right.
