1881-S NGC MS-62 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin - From Original Bag
The Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin was the US’ official $5 circulation coin from 1839 to 1908.
These coins are 90% pure gold, are legal tender, and showcase a unique design created by Christian Gobrecht.
Like most Pre-1933 Gold Coins, many $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins were subject to confiscation and melting due to Executive Order 6102 in 1933 in an attempt to contain the economic collapse of 1929.
However, this recently discovered hoard of Brilliant Uncirculated 1881 $5 Liberty Half Eagles survived the Federal Government's purge! Found stashed away in a bank vault, this original bag has sat unopened since 1881. The coins were struck by the US Mint in 1881 and placed into the original bag, but they have not seen the light of day until now!
These coins, in particular, were issued in the San Francisco Mint and bear the “S” mint mark.
Today, SD Bullion offers 1881-S $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins from Original Bag, sealed in NGC slabs and certified as MS-62 samples.

The Design
The obverse showcases Lady Liberty in a left-profile bust, wearing a coronet with the word “LIBERTY” engraved on it. The thirteen stars surrounding her bust represent the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of mintage is at the bottom rim.
The reverse features the Heraldic Eagle with the national shield on its chest, olive branches and arrows in its talons, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” written on a banner, which appears above its head.
The “S” mint mark from the San Francisco Mint is beneath the Eagle.
The inscriptions encircling the image read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE D.”, which refers to the coin’s face value.
An NGC MS-62 Coin
NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is a renowned third-party service that appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale as a parameter. The scale ranks coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.
An MS coin indicates a Mint State coin, that is, a coin issued as a business circulation one. Grade 62 suggests that the coin may present marks and hairlines in focal areas, noticeable scuff marks, and below-average planchet quality. But acceptable overall appearance.
