The Liberty Head Gold Coin served as the official dollar coin in the United States from 1849 to 1889. It contained .0483 Troy oz of gold and featured a design by James B. Longacre.

The $1 Liberty Coin experienced three design revisions. The Type II version was crafted from 1854 to 1856. It was known as the Indian Princess design, which features a smaller effigy of Lady Liberty on the obverse. However, the complexity of the image led to production errors, necessitating the replacement of these coins.

The coins issued in the New Orleans Mint bear the “O” mint mark.

The Design

The obverse features Lady Liberty adorned with a fanciful feathered headdress inscribed “LIBERTY.” It is inspired by the Venus Accroupie, also known as the Crouching Venus, a sculpture displayed at the Philadelphia Museum.

The image is encircled by the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” 

The reverse displays the coin’s denomination and year of issuance, surrounded by the “agricultural wheat,” which comprises cotton, corn, tobacco, and wheat.

The “O” mint mark from the New Orleans Mint is also engraved on the reverse.
