The story of Frosty the Snowman originated with the song surrounding his adventures. The song was released in 1950 and was written by Steve Nelson & Jack Rollins. The song describes Frosty coming alive after a magic silk hat is placed on his head by a group of school kids. He proceeds to go sledding and ice-skating with the children. The song ends with the weather becoming warmer and Frosty having to move to a colder climate, but he promises the children he will be back when winter comes again. The song inspired a book, and eventually a TV special that was created in 1969. In future TV specials, Frosty goes on to have a family and go on adventures with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
The obverse features Frosty the Snowman tipping his top hat while riding down a snow-covered hill on a wooden sled. He is depicted wearing a striped scarf and with his famous corn cob pipe in his mouth. The words “Holiday Greetings” is minted in cursive in the upper right of the round.
The reverse of these silver rounds is beautifully detailed. It features a wonderfully crafted snowflake in the middle of the round with 10 evenly spaced smaller snowflakes around it. Stems of holly are minted around the edge of the silver round with the words “ONE TROY OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER” at the very top.
