The $1 Liberty Head Gold Coin was the first and the smallest Liberty gold dollar coin ever minted.

The US Mint only produced them from 1849 to 1854, showcasing James B. Longacre’s design and .0483 oz of actual gold content.

Longacre’s obverse design showcases Lady Liberty looking left, wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY.” The image is supplemented by thirteen stars, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies on the border.

On the reverse, the coin’s face value of “1 DOLLAR” is in the spotlight. It is accompanied by the year of issuance, surrounded by a wreath encircled by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”
