The Design

The “MEMENTO MORI” obverse design is a symbolic image of its real meaning. 

It showcases a centralized skull encircled by a wreath of flowers. There is a crowned winged mini-skull of good and evil on top, other skulls flanking the central one, an hourglass on the bottom, a dice showing a roll of 7, a snail, and a flower spread over the wreath. The expression that names the round is engraved on the outer rim.

The Intaglio Mint logo is featured on the reverse. It is accompanied by the round’s weight, metal content, purity, and year of issuance engraved on the outer rim.

The story behind “Memento Mori”

The legend that explains this Latin expression dates back to ancient Rome when a victorious general returned home after winning an important battle. 

He was accoladed, complimented, and congratulated, which filled the general with pride and arrogance. 

An unnoticed slave who was watching the parade uttered the phrase “Memento mori,” which was captured only by his master. 

That phrase translates to “Remember that you must die too,” and it may be a call to action. It reminds us of our mortality, the importance of doing our best while alive, and that no human despite earthly accomplishments is greater than death.
