First issued in 1997, the Platinum Eagle series expanded the U.S. Mint’s American Eagle Program, which had begun with Gold and Silver Eagles in 1986. 

Each coin is legal tender with a $100 face value and contains 1 troy oz of .9995 fine platinum. Known for their exceptional purity and detailed design, Platinum Eagles hold a prestigious place in modern numismatics.

These coins, specifically, are Proof Platinum Eagles. Prof coins feature sharply detailed designs, mirror-like fields, and frosted reliefs. They are struck multiple times with polished dies, creating a stunning finish.

The Design

The obverse may portray a close-up of the Statue of Liberty, designed by John Mercanti, along with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” the words “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage. There are other years with other designs, and these vary based on currently available inventory at the time of purchase.

The reverse displays a flying Eagle as the sun rises in the background, designed by Thomas D. Roger. The inscriptions on this side read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “.9995,” “PLATINUM,” “1 oz,” and “$100”.

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) and PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) are renowned third-party services that work independently from sovereign mints. Using the Sheldon Grading Scale, NGC and PCGS appraises and grades coins from 1 to 70 based on their condition.

The initials "PF" and "PR" both stand for "Proof Coin," indicating a coin produced for collection purposes. It exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. Grade 70 is attributed to flawless coins.
