The Design
The design of the Indian Head Quarter Eagle Gold Coin is attributed to sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, an Augustus Saint-Gaudens student.
The obverse displays the left-profile bust of a Native American Chief, wearing a full headdress encircled by thirteen five-pointed stars. The word “LIBERTY” arches over his depiction while the year of issuance is beneath it.
The reverse design features the Bald Eagle perched on an arrow, which is wrapped around an olive branch.
The Eagle is flanked by “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on the left and “IN GOD WE TRUST” on the right. The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” are engraved on top, and the coin’s face value of “2 ½ DOLLARS” is at the bottom rim.
An NGC or PCGS MS-63 Coin
The PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service and the NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company are internationally recognized third-party services that use the Sheldon Grading Scale to classify coins according to their condition at the moment of appraisal within particular grades.
The scale ranks coins from 1 to 70.
MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin shaped as a widespread circulation sample, which remained uncirculated.
Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines, detracting scuff marks or defects throughout the design. But still attractive overall appearance.
