The Design

Philip Nathan signs Britannia’s reverse design, which showcases the national symbol as a protector of the realm by carrying the Union Jack Shield and her trident against a fierce wind. The inscriptions “BRITANNIA,” the year of issuance, “1 oz,” and “999.5 PLATINUM.” for weight, fineness, and metal content surround the image.

A small padlock on the lower left transforms into a trident as you tilt the coin from side to side. The background waves come to life when viewed from different angles. Encircling Britannia's image, the micro-engraved inscription "Decus et Tutamen," meaning "an ornament and a safeguard," adds an extra layer of intricate detail.

The Mintage

The Britannia Series was released in 1987 with the 1 oz Gold Britannia, which, at that time, counted on a .917 pure gold content. 

The Silver Britannia was the next release on the list of bullion Britannia coins, debuting in 1997 with the 1 oz Silver coin containing .958 fine silver.
