The Design
The obverse design, signed by artist Martin Jennings, portrays King Charles III. His Majesty’s depiction is encircled by “CHARLES III,” the initials “D.G.REX.F.D,” which in Latin means “By the grace of God, King,” the year of issuance, and the face value.
The reverse features Michael Gaudioso’s design, capturing key battle elements, including Paul Revere’s “midnight ride.”
The upper rim is inscribed with “THE SHOT HEARD ROUND THE WORLD,” a phrase synonymous with the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. The bottom rim reads “250 YEARS,” accompanied by 13 stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies.
The Battles of Lexington and Concord
On April 19, 1775, the British army marched from Boston to Concord, Massachusetts, aiming to seize colonial weapons and ammunition. However, Paul Revere and other riders warned the local militias, who swiftly mobilized to defend their territory. Revere’s initiative was historically recognized as the “midnight ride.”
The first shots were fired on Lexington Green, sparking a conflict that ended in a decisive American victory. The British were forced to retreat under relentless militia fire as reinforcements from neighboring colonies rushed to support the cause.
These battles marked the official beginning of the American War of Independence, rallying patriots and laying the foundation for the Continental Army that would go on to fight for liberty.
