Una and the Lion Series is the Royal Mint’s newest release. 

It is composed of silver and gold bars of varied sizes, with an alluring design inspired by the famous poem “The Faerie Queene” by Edmund Spenser.

In the tale, Una is a princess who finds herself in trouble when a terrible dragon imprisons her parents in her kingdom. During her escape, she comes across a huge lion, which, instead of eating her, falls in love with her beauty and serenity and becomes her loyal champion.

The gold bars of the series weigh 1 troy oz and are 99.99% pure gold content. They are individually serialized and housed in a blister package.

The Design

Jody Clark created the series’ front design inspired by William Wyon's Una and the Lion design for the Royal Mint’s coins.

In a landscape-oriented image, Una and the lion are depicted alluringly, with a decorated pattern used as a backdrop and the words “DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS,” which translate to “May God direct my steps,” engraved beneath the image. This text was featured on the original design of the Una and the Lion coinage minted by the Royal Mint. 

The reverse side has the same background pattern and is imprinted with the Royal Mint logo and the bar’s essential hallmarks regarding weight, metal content, and purity, which read “1 oz 999.9 FINE GOLD.”
